Who Is The IES?

The Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) was established in 1906 and is the recognized technical and educational authority on illumination.

Lighting Standards

The IES is an accredited Standards Development Organization (SDO) under ANSI approved procedures.

Periodicals and Publications

The Illuminating Engineering Society publishes regular periodicals and publications about lighting, including:

  • Lighting Design + Application (LD+A)
  • LEUKOS, Journal of the Illuminating Engineering Society.

Education

As an accredited Continuing Education provider with the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and the U.S. Green Buildings Council (USGBC), the IES continually updates its education program.

Sections

There are 95 local Sections of the IES in North America.

Committees

The committees are one of the main strengths of the IES. There are over 1000 members on approximately 100 standing committees and sub-committees serving to develop lighting standards, education courses, and lighting application documents.

Board Of Directors

The Society’s governing body, the Board consists of 14 members from different areas of the lighting community.

Events

IES local, regional, and international meetings, conferences, symposia, seminars, workshops, and lighting exhibitions provide information on the latest industry developments.

Sustainability

Applying sustainability to lighting design requires IES to re-evaluate many of its recommendations in terms of potential impact on the environment. Sustainable or “green” design is a collaborative approach to architecture and construction intended to minimize the overall environmental impact of buildings while meeting the needs of building occupants.
